Monkey Trail

Monkey premotor neurons (area F5) discharge during execution of goal directed hand actions. More interestingly, a class of them, "canonical neurons", seems to code action affordances. However, it is unclear whether the discharge properties are associated to discrete categories (precision grip, power grip, side grip, etc) or to a continuum between all possible hand-object interactions. Therefore, this issue is of great relevance to comprehend the nature of action encoding in premotor cortices. This foundamental line of research has been fostered by the close and fruitful interactions emerged in the POETICON CE Project. Specifically, the University of Ferrara, the Italian Institute of Technology and the Max Planck Institute in Tubingen, are collaborating on the design and production of a motorized device to conduct experiments on both the monkey and humans grasping an object. This device enables the simultaneous parametric control of the opposition space and the recording of finger forces excerpted during grasping. Once completed, we'll conduct behavioural tests on humans and then we will use it to study the properties of F5 neurons with much greater details and accuracy. The device consists in a parallel mechanism simulating a handle that must be grasped by the monkey to open the trail in order to get the reward (food).
